Knowledge is
Power: Conferences, Workshops and Lectures
Attending conferences and other educational presentations is an
efficient way to keep current on the latest autism treatment
developments. The new research often presented in such forums can take a
long time finding its way into the mainstream of information.
FEAT accepts no advertising for these listings and only includes
those which appear to have particular merit. For the most part, FEAT’s
listings are focused on treatment practices that have been validated by
research. If you know about an event that may be suitable for inclusion,
kindly send the information to
info@ctfeat.org.

Opportunities at SERC
Connecticut’s State Education Resource Center (SERC), a non-profit
organization primarily funded by the Connecticut State Department of
Education, holds “professional development” workshops every school year,
most of which are open to parents as well (though a given event’s
description of its intended audience may not say as much). However,
pre-registration is required. SERC sponsors about a half-dozen trainings
specific to autism each year. Information about them is contained in the
“Focus on Autism Initiative” section of the annual Professional
Development Catalogue published at SERC’s website.
In our experience, these “professional development” presentations
usually are more substantive than presentations focused primarily on
parent audiences. The events also tend to very reasonably priced, with
some scholarship funding available as well. You’ll find upcoming events
listed at SERC’s web site,
www.ctserc.org.
Topics for the 2011-2012 school year include: Teaching Social Skills
to Students with Autism and Related Disabilities; Addressing Challenging
Behavior for Students with Autism and Related Disabilities; and Overview
of Methodologies and Interventions for Educating and Supporting Students
with Autism.
Eden Autism Services Offers Web
Based Workshops
The Outreach Division of Eden Autism Services, based in New Jersey,
offers various kinds of training opportunities for professionals,
paraprofessionals and parents interested in learning about autism and
applied behavior analysis (ABA). Some training events take place at
Eden’s facility in Monroe, New Jersey. Others are available via the
internet in the “webinar” format. The webinar trainings take place
monthly on Wednesday afternoons and cost $25. Eden also offers an
extensive line of online courses. Many of these presentations provide
BACB Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Workshops encompass a wide range
of topics and techniques for designing, implementing and assessing
remedial programs for individuals with autism and are led by
Eden Outreach
faculty who have significant experience with the material presented. For
information regarding the upcoming schedule, go to
